News in 4a
April 4th, 2008
Dear parents,
Things are becoming busier for us here in the fourth grade as the year goes on! The following is a list of dates and activities to remember for April.
There is a 2-hour late start next Wednesday, April 9th.
We will be walking to Lindberg School next Monday, April 7th for a presentation on bullying. Most of the students turned in their permission forms.
We will be going to St. Otto’s on Monday, April 14th from 1:30-2:30.
Book orders will be going home next week. They will be due back by April 15th. Please make checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs.
The last week of April or first week in May will be the Iowa Basic Skills testing for fourth grade. This test will include many questions in the areas of math and reading, as well as some in science and social. I feel your children will do quite well on this test. The exact dates of testing will be sent home in a few weeks, as it is important for all students to try to be in school during those days!
If your child has a summer birthday, he/she may choose any school day between now and May 16th to celebrate if he/she chooses. Just send a quick note stating when your child would like to celebrate and I’ll respond as to if the day would work. Thank you!
* On May 8th, the fourth graders will be taking their annual field trip to Pioneer Park in Annandale. We will be leaving here at 8:30a.m. and returning by 2:45 p.m. Since only fourth graders will share the bus, there will be room for parents and any younger siblings if you wish to join us for the day. There will be a fee for admission. More details will be sent home at a later date, but I just wanted to give you a “heads up.”
Here are some of the things we will be learning about in April.
Religion: The Sacraments
Reading: Finishing HOLES & project and starting a new novel called Fig Pudding
L.A.: Prefixes & Suffixes
Math: Multiplication and Division
Science: The Respiratory, Circulatory, & Digestive Systems
Social Studies: History of the Middle and Southwest

Religion
This week, we will practice for the Mass that we will plan. The Mass will be on Wednesday, January 25. We do not have school on Monday and Tuesday of that week. I hope the children will remember what to do after such a long break.
Reading
We will read, “Cat Traps” from the Let’s learn Together book. We will also read “The Snowy Day.” We will learn to sequence a story about snow. We will also learn about words with (ing) endings. We will learn to spell the word (a,to).
Math
We will learn to count by 2’s and 5’s. We will review the numbers to 100 and have a math test on Friday.
Website
I will include all letters on my school website. If you loose yours, you can find it at www.molschool.org. I will put pictures of the students doing different activities throughout the day. You may enjoy checking up on them.

- Kindergarten News
We had a great week in kindergarten filled with many pumpkin activities. We described our pumpkins, talked about the different shades of orange present in the pumpkins, compared sizes and shapes and measured both the height and distance around our pumpkins. The children learned all about the lifecycle of a pumpkin.
The color words we worked with were purple and pink.
We are learning about the blessing of friends in religion. We read Bible stories about Jesus’ special friends, the apostles. The children all shared many ways they can be good friends to each other.
Next Week:
*Our letter of the week is Oo.
*Please send in a picture or 2 of vegetables on Monday. That is the food group we are learning about next week.
*Marathon $ is due Monday.
*Next week is a short one for Kindergarten. NO SCHOOL ON WED., THURS., FRI.!!!
*If you bring your child to school in the morning, please have him/her at school by 8:10 at the latest. The children have many morning “jobs” which encompass learning activities. Some of the children become unsettled if they walk in the door and they don’t have time for their morning jobs or if we are already at the rug for circle time.
*Remember to send in a small portion of vegetable for our class vegetable soup. Please have it cleaned, cut and ready to toss in the soup!!
