Welcome to Fifth Grade

I am Melissa Holey, and am starting my 10th year in 5th grade. I grew up in the Randall area. I now live in Little Falls with my husband, Joel, our seven year old son, Alex, and our daughter, Emma, who is almost ffive. I attend Our Lady of Lourdes Church. I also work with the knowledge bowl program and am a yearbook advisor at Mary of Lourdes. I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and gardening. I have enjoyed my 8 years here and know this is going to be a fun, exciting, and educational year. Please feel free to contact me at anytime about concerns or questions you may have. Fifth grade is a big step for students. They went from being the oldest at the elementary to being the youngest in the school. Students at the middle school are expected to be more responsible for themselves and their school work. Fifth graders are becoming adolescents which means they are growing physically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially. You may notice that social issues become bigger than they need to be at times. Please be sensitive when having get togethers, use the mail to deliver invitations. We have different grading percentages for fifth grade than for fourth grade. This means that what was a B in fourth grade may mean a C this year. Students usually adjust to this after the first couple of grade reports. I encourage students to bring water bottles to school. These can be kept at their table, and refilled at break times if needed. Water helps the brain work more efficiently. The use of water bottles also means less wasted time at the water fountain. Each morning students will be given the opportunity to have a snack. I ask that nutritious snacks are brought. Some snacks that have been brought in the past are: popcorn, pretzels, crackers, fruit, raw vegetables, granola bars, and dry cereal. Please do not bring candy, chips, cookies, or cake for snack. I do have some snacks that will be available for purchase from the school store for $.25-$.75. We have tables instead of desks this year. At the beginning of each day, there will be a schedule on the far left of the board that lists the classes for that day. In the morning, students need to look at the board and bring the materials for the classes that occur before lunch. After lunch, they need to look what materials will be needed for their afternoon classes. In the handbook it states that students should expect homework nightly. The amount that an individual student will have depends on how time in class is used. Students have time to work assignments in class. If students choose not to use that time, more will need to be completed at home. If you have any concerns about homework, please bring them to my attention. An assignment is due at the beginning of a class period. If students do not have something completed they will need to stay in from recess to complete it. Once it is completed, students are able to join recess. If an assignment is left at home, it is considered late. Students are given an assignment notebook. All assignments are written on the board and students should copy them into their book. The assignment notebook should be brought home nightly. Please look at it so that you are aware of what work is due. Students also should bring their accordion folder home nightly. I grade using points. Each assignment is worth a number of points, usually it is how many questions or problems are on the assignment. Students may also receive a rubric with an assignment. It will state the number of points and students need to look it over before turning an assignment in. Tests and quizzes are important. I double the points for those, which makes them worth a little more than the average assignment. An example of this is a 30 question test would be worth 60 points. Students are able to correct most daily assignments to receive the missed points. Students may not correct writing assignments, unless I ask them to, or tests and quizzes. They have 1 day after getting the assignment back to redo it on a separate sheet of paper, staple the new one to the original, and turn it into the correcting basket. I hope students take full advantage of this opportunity. Each prayer is 20 points for religion. Students are given a sheet with prayers at the beginning of the quarter. This sheet includes the due dates for each prayer. Some of the prayers are short and familiar, while others are not. Students should start working on a prayer well in advance of when it is due. Students can tell me the prayer whenever they know it, even if it is before the due date. Each day a prayer is late, one point will be lost. In the past, I have used e-mail to communicate more with parents. I send home nightly e-mails of the assignments for the day. I may also use e-mail to inform parents tidbits of information. I will still call parents with serious issues, if needed. If you have e-mail and would like utilize this for more communication between home and school, please make sure I have your address.
